Improvisation:

  • No binoculars? Climb a ladder and inspect the roof carefully (with a safety line if possible). Slower but effective.
  • No weatherstripping? Cloth tape, felt strips, or even rolled towels against drafty gaps work temporarily.
  • No caulk? Temporary sealing can be done with cloth tape or waterproof tape. Not permanent, but buys time.
  • No means to clear gutters safely? A long stick or broom handle can dislodge leaves from the ground (less effective, but safer than climbing).

Historical Note:

Early 1900s Britain had simple roofs (slate or clay tiles), basic gutters (often just a wooden trough lined with sheet metal), and no weatherstripping or modern caulk. Homes relied on multiple layers: wooden shutters sealed windows, chimneys drew out damp air, and large roof overhangs shed water away from walls. Safety:
